How to manage the increased demand for imaging tests

The management of a health institution itself is already complex. With the increased demand for imaging tests – in some hospitals, imaging tests such as X-ray, CT scan, MRI and ultrasound reach the mark of 7000 per month –, there was a clear need to manage these resources seeking productivity and efficiency.

Although modernization has facilitated the handling of digital imaging tests, organizing the entire diagnostic process may not be that easy. The best solution to manage these digital images lies in the adoption of a Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).

Focused on simplifying the daily routine, PACS manages the processes of scanningand storage of those images. Generally speaking, it consists of hardware and software aimed at acquisition, archiving and display of data and medical images.

Each component is fully integrated through computer networks and computer applications compatible with DICOM standard (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine), a set of rules that makes the communication and storage of medical information in a single electronic format structured by protocol.

To provide immediate access to the medical images in digital format and in any hospital sector, PACS requires a fully integrated environment with all imaging equipment into the system (including analogical through the insertion of devices for capture).

From the standpoint of management, this is an advantage that is displayed later. PACS solutions enable the monitoring of the entire image stream, from the acquisition of the exam to diagnostics, up to the reporting process. After the investment phase, there is a clear reduction of work list and image integration errors.

In addition to a specific environment for the storage of images, investment in equipment, logical network and staff training, PACS can also work together with financial and quality management support solutions.

Taking into consideration that the demand for exams fluctuates while the fixed and variable costs are constant, increasing productivity in diagnostic medicine is a challenge for managers. In addition to the communication, integration and monitoring system, service marketing tools may also maximize the results in this situation without negative impact on satisfaction.
